Milano Mayor Beppe Sala at the European Parliament

29th March 2023

This morning I am attending a meeting of the Green Group at the European Parliament as he shares the struggles of Italian Mayors who wish to register the birth certificates of children born outside of Italy to Italian families of two dads or two mums.

Co-Chair of the LGBTI Intergroup at the European Parliament Kim Van Sparrentak talks about the hope in seeing the protests in Milan.

Beppe Sala says that 7% of citizens in Milan are from the LGBTI community, it is important to represent and work for their rights.

There are more protections which LGBTQI families would need from their cities & states, unfortunately the current action has shifted debate on this issue of birth certificate registration. These kids remain in legal limbos & assisted birth remains accessible only to the straight.

All this happening this week makes the discussions of the European Greens Local Council Network which I am moderating on Thursday even more important. “A city for everyone: how local policies create a real change for LGBTIQ Communities”.
