2022 Gender Corrective Mechanism

I do think that the Gender corrective mechanism backfired in a huge way. As votes were coming through we did realise that there were less than usual for women. With some being skipped in block voting consistently. A protest vote in its own way?

5 women elected (Miriam Dalli on two districts, so that means a casual election). 65 men (some of these will be casual elections & women might get in). That’s 8% of Parliament. Less than ratio of women who ran (25% of candidates were women).

The Gender Corrective Mechanism has backfired. People assume women will get in with the ‘quota’ & did not support them… It shows the need for gender equality mechanisms to be implemented at the party level. But there’s much more that needs to be done for system change.
